The user group manager displays a list of active user groups and a list
of deleted user groups. The user groups are presented in a tabular format along with
the group's description, the number of members, the group's permission (if enabled)
and the group's subscribe status.
If the expand icon () is pressed each of the
members in the group is listed. Press the collapse icon ()
to hide the list of members. If a user group resolves to any email addresses the mail icon
() appears next to the group. Click on this icon to
send all users in the group an email.
Using user groups
User groups serve several purposes:
Notifications
User groups may be used as a shortcut to a list of email addresses, users or other groups.
These shortcuts may then be entered into the 'notify' field of events. When the item
is modified the shortcut is resolved to email addresses which are sent a notification.
For further information see the email feature.
Access
User groups may be used to grant access to events. Using the access level field
you may specify the item is 'public to group only' which means that only users with
common group membership may view the event - otherwise the event is private to its owner.
Subscriptions
User groups may be made subscribable which means end users may add themselves
or remove themselves from the group. There is more information below on
subscribable groups.
Permissions
You may grant permissions to a user group. All members of that group will then be
granted that permission. This feature must be enabled under the user
settings dialog first. You may use this feature, for example, to create a group called
'adminUsers' granting the group admin permission.
Note that group permissions are 'weaker' than other permissions settings in the sense that
a group permission may only raise a regular permission. If the group permission is lower than
the permission a user would have otherwise gotten it is ignored. Please see the
user permissions help file for more information.
Subscribable groups
You may choose to make certain user groups 'subscribable' (if there is such a word). A
subscribable group is identical to any other user group except end users may add
themselves or remove themselves. When a user is logged in, if any subscribable groups exist,
a manage subscriptions icon () appears in the icon
tray, thus:
If the user clicks on this icon he/she will be presented with the manage
subscriptions dialog. Please see that help file for more information.
